The Twelve Days of COVID

The Twelve Days of COVID poem by Iris Carden

On the first day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
a nose running fairly freely.

On the second day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the third day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the fourth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the fifth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the sixth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the seventh day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
seven bouts of brain fog
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the eighth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
eight killer headaches
seven bouts of brain fog
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the ninth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
nine antivirals
eight killer headaches
seven bouts of brain fog
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the tenth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
ten scrambled tastebuds
nine antivirals
eight killer headaches
seven bouts of brain fog
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the eleventh day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
eleven fits of coughing
ten scrambled tastebuds
nine antivirals
eight killer headaches
seven bouts of brain fog
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

On the twelfth day of COVID, the virus gave to me:
twelve nights of fever
eleven fits of coughing
ten scrambled tastebuds
nine antivirals
eight killer headaches
seven bouts of brain fog
six sleeping problems
five positive tests
four aching joints
three sneezes
two hacking coughs
and a nose running fairly freely.

Note: I have tested negative now, but still have coughing fits whenever I move, so I’m improving. I hope everyone out there is safe and well.
