What Happens Now? by Iris Carden

Yesterday on this blog, I published the final chapter of Colony, earlier in the year, I completed The Venomous Void (sequel to Wendy Watchitt).

So what happens to these bigger works when I’ve finished writing?

First, I’m leaving them alone for at least six months, maybe longer. If they’re not too fresh in my mind, the Then, I’ll start to prepare them for publishing. For each book, I will:

  • Paint the book cover, a task which takes weeks and will continue while the other things on this list happen.
  • A read-through to check for basics, such as spelling, grammar, and typos. (I leave in some grammatical issues if they suit the flow of the story. For me, the story comes ahead of all rules.)
  • A second read-through to check for consistency, whether the characters are consistent all the way through, whether the story makes sense as its told, and whether the places the story wandered away from the plan are improvements or mistakes.
  • A final read-through checking for any problems.
  • Check the format, write the front matter, assign ISBNs and list with the ISBN agency.
  • Prepublication listing with the National Library of Australia.
  • Upload the finished book, with cover art to Lulu, and buy sample copy.
  • If the sample is OK, approve for world-wide circulation, and buy copies for legal deposit to the Queensland State Library and the National Library of Australia.
  • Then promote the books whenever I can and hope people will buy them.

Of course, I also need to come up with an idea for my next work in progress. If I get that started by next Saturday, I will share the first chapter. If not, I’ll share a chapter of one of my already-published books.

Please note: these chapters are the very raw first draft, what appears in the final book may be different. The working title has changed from Survival to Colony, as has the draft cover art, and they may or may not change again before I finish writing the book..
