Rose poem by Iris Carden

A rose is a feast for the senses
the perfection of flowers.
It presents complete delight
for all the sensory powers.

The sight of a rose is art.
Each petal a lover's pledge.
The vivid colour subtly changes
from deep centre to pale edge.

The scent of the rose evokes memories.
Perfumes of loved people and places.
It transports us back through time,
and through so many different spaces.

The feel of the rose is delicate
when caressing a soft petal,
but the leaf is tough like leather
and the stem has spikes of metal.

The taste of the rose is exotic
rosewater dances over the tongue,
In cakes, and Turkish delight,
the taste is second to none.

The sound of the rose is silence,
gentle peace of the quiet garden.
Who doesn't crave that silent,
quiet, peace now and then?

You could give me a hundred cut roses,
and I would love them for a while.
But plant them in the garden,
and they'd always make me smile.
